What's the difference between Carvera Air and the original Carvera?

Carvera Air primarily aims to offer a similar solution that approaches Carvera's functionality and machining capabilities to customers with relatively limited budgets, especially those new to CNC.

What CAM software to use for making PCBs?

We recommend Makera CAM for the Carvera and Carvera Air as it has been carefully optimized for your machine, making them easier and more intuitive to use for both beginners and professionals, and you can also use FlatCAM or CopperCAM to make PCBs.

Can Carvera Air handle Steel?

If you machine steel occasionally and don't care too much about the time, then the answer is Yes! You can get carbon steel and stainless steel milled with a clean finish at a relatively low speed.

But overall, we do not suggest milling steel or harder materials a lot. The Carvera Air was designed mainly for wood, plastic, and soft metals like aluminum and brass.

What is Carvera Air's working area?

The working area for 3 axis milling is: 30cm (X) * 20cm (Y) * 13cm (Z) / 11.8in * 7.9in * 5.1in, and the working area for 4 axis milling is: 9.2cm (Diameter) * 20cm (Length) / 3.6in * 7.9in. You can see other detailed specs on our page.

What is the voltage and input watt of Carvera Air?

Voltage: 100-120VAC / 200-240VAC @ 50/60Hz, max input power is 400 watts.

Which components seen in the video and on the webpage are included in the machine, and which are not? For example, the tablet holder and tablet, vacuum system, air assist system, etc.

The phone/tablet holder is included, but the tablet/phone is not. You can use your existing phone/tablet to operate it.

The dust collection hose and dust boot are included, but the external vacuum device is not included.

The air tube and air blower head are included, but the external air pump is not included.

Would you recommend suitable vacuum and air pump systems with Carvera Air?

1. We recommend the Makera Cyclone Dust Collector, purpose-built for long, continuous milling with Carvera and Carvera Air. Check here for more details>>

2. First, an air compressor is not essential, even when machining metals such as aluminum or copper. You can choose from almost any air compressor on the market. The Carvera air intake diameter is 8mm. Based on our experience and feedback from Carvera users, a pressure of 3.5 bar (50 psi) or higher is sufficient.

First Problems, Then Redemption

As one of the first 200 backers for the Carvera Air, I unfortunately received a unit that had some issues. It was dented on one side, had the head of one of the screws broken off in one of the panels, and arrived with some parts rattling around in the box like the tool setter that must have come loose during shipping. This had me quite concerned, as this was the largest Kickstarter purchase I've ever made and I wasn't sure what the customer service from Makera was like.

All I can say is that they greatly exceeded my expectations!!! The customer service was excellent and they had a new unit to me within about ten days. The second machine has performed flawlessly and any misgivings I may have had were done away with entirely. I have complete faith in the company and am eagerly looking forward to the release of their upcoming dust collection accessory for the Carvera Air. With the number of units they had from the Kickstarter, one or two were bound to get messed up, so it was a huge relief that they made everything right so quickly.

If you're on the fence or apprehensive because this is your first CNC machine, don't be. The tutorials for MakeraCAM are short and easy to follow, and it doesn't take much of a leap to use other CAM software like Fusion360. I had no CAM experience at all, but was machining parts I've designed within the first night of watching tutorials. Take the plunge. You won't regret it!

Very good desktop CNC with wonderful support and community

I backed the project on KS with hopes that the machine would prove useful as a gateway to CNC world for my students at the university and so far it has been fulfilling or exceeding expectations. I am particularly happy about the apparent care and attention to detail which went into the supporting materials, manuals, tutorial videos and such. One of our students, first time touching any CNC was able to succesfully fabricate a double sided PCB with solder mask entirely by himself and there were no major hickups in the suggested workflow. I am yet to experiment with cutting aluminium and trying true 3D toolpaths but I can already tell that in terms of build quality and functionality, Carvera AIR is a great product!

3D printing to CNC

When 3D printers first started to come to the market they were big, expensive and complex to use. Now anyone can get into 3D printer.

The Carvera Air is like the turn point for the CNC machines. It is smaller, reasonable priced and very easy to use. I have a 4'x4' CNC machine from another company and it works great for large projects. I will be using the Carvera Air for making smaller more complex parts. The enclosed cabinet keep the spindle quiet as well as keep the depris contained within.

The ability to easily create PCB (Printed Circuit Boards) is great for prototyping at home, as you can make small changes to get things just right.

I plan on using it to create parts for RC cars but I have not got to that yet, but should be relatively easy to use as I can use the same deisgn software from 3D printing.
